CLECS Y CLWB / CLUB GOSSIP ( October 2012) (28-10-2012)
Aled Bebb reports on the golfing activities that took place between the October showers.
Departing Member acknowledged and departed Members remembered.
The summer programme at Aberystwyth Golf Club drew to an end with the completion of two important competitions.
The 36 hole J.R.James Shield had taken place at the beginning of September with the first 18 holes played on a Saturday with the 2nd 18 holes due to be played on following day. Due to a crowded calendar, the final 18 holes were not played until the beginning of October. In the first round, young Jack Rimmer playing off 12 had an excellent round of 75 (net 63) which gave him a 5 shot lead over Martin Haynes who returned a net 68. In the second round Jack - despite the pressure of the chasing pack - returned a net 64 for a total of 137 to win the prestigious shield. Tony Evans (71 and 68) for 139 came second with Phil Richards (74 + 67, 141), third. Martin Haynes (68 + 73, 141) lost out on the count back. This latest success by Jack Rimmer has seen his handicap reduced to ten and seen an overall drop of 8 shots during a very successful summer.
The last Knockout final of the Summer was the conclusion of the Club's Foursome Championship with Club Captain, Clive Williams and Emlyn Thomas taking on the Llanilar duo of Dylan Morris and Roly Salmon. The Llanilar duo started of like an express train and went two up after two, with Roly Salmon slotting putts of thirty feet on the first and twenty feet on the second. However Clive and Emlyn won the next two to draw level after four. Holes were exchanged for the next five holes with the match still level after nine. Clive and Emlyn won the tenth and thirteenth to go two up and though Dylan and Roly won the fifteenth, Clive and Emlyn won the seventeenth to close out a close and well fought match by 2 and 1.
The last competition of the summer off the back tees took place as an extra Stableford and in pleasant Autumnal weather, Steve Hughes beat Emrys James on countback both returning 38 points. Third with 36 points was Eaghan McNeil.
The Rabbits Dyfed league team held an end of season competition where Mark Rimmer returned 39 points. Mike Morris was second, also 39 points. They were followed by Arwyn Morris (37) and Phillip Talco (36). After the competition, everyone enjoyed an excellent meal at the nineteenth hole during which team Captain Terry Richards presented fellow rabbit Gwilym Williams with a memento to remind him of his time with the team. Gwilym who has been a stalwart and a real 8 inch nail of the community and the Club, having been Captain in his time and also chairing the Club for several years. He and his wife are in the process of leaving the area for Cardiff. They will be sadly missed not only in the Golf Club but also by the numerous other associations they have been involved in.
It is also sad to note the passing away of two club members. David Wilson, Club Captain in 1996 will always be remembered for the quiet but authoritative way he led the club during his time in office. Also the passing away of ex committee member Barry Hill was a shock to all, but especially his co cut throat players. His spick and span presentation on and off the course always stood out.
The Club’s deepest sympathy goes to the families of both gentlemen.
