One of the most prestigious competitions in the Golfing Calendar of Aberystwyth Golf Club took place on the first weekend of July namely the Corporation Cup played over thirty six holes. Despite some good returns in the morning 18 holes by Davies 67 net and Dylan Morris 69 net, two level par rounds of 70 + 70 = 140 net ensured that Martin Haynes playing off thirteen was the winner rewarding him for his consistency. Runner up to Martin was Dylan Edwards also playing off thirteen returned 70 + 71 = 141 and Jonathan Evans off eleven with 69 + 74 = 143 third.
The following week had the third qualifying round of the Redvers Llewellyn combined with the Golf Union of Wales individual qualifier take place. Leading the qualifiers and going on to represent the club was Jonathan Evans 74-10-64 and also becoming a single handicapper (9) en route. Runner up was Phil Richards with a two under par 68-1-67 beating another good round from Dylan Morris 73-6-67 on count-back with George Shepherd 88-20-68 fourth.
In mid week, the long awaited return match for the Friendship Cup played between Aberystwyth and Borth & Ynyslas was played on the links of Borth. On an other friendly social night
Aberystwyth reclaimed the Cup by winning 4 – 2 and will now retain the Cup until next year.
The Tigers continued to improve in the Dyfed League and beat Tenby 5½ to 1½ at home while the Rabbits travelled to Cwmrhydyneuadd where they shared the spoils three matches each. The Seniors continued on their nomadic tour fifteen players playing the Ashburnham Senior Open. Huw Williams with 39 points won his category only failing to be the overall winner losing on the back six. He was also nearest the pin in two on the par four eleventh hole. Another twelve players visited Carmarthen Golf Club for their Seniors Open where Richie Jenkins excelled – his 39 points resulting in him being second overall. He also had the longest drive award on the par five 15th.
On the last week of June a Texas Scramble Competition was held at the club with the proceeds going to the Bow Street Football Club. With the weather being kind, eighteen teams ventured out and some excellent golf as well as socialising took place on the course. Leading the way was the Team of Richard Lucas, Guy Evans, Aled Williams and Chris Regan, marginally beating the team of Richard, Peter and Andy James and Steve Moleres. Tim Jenkins, Jonathan Evans, Jeremy Edmunds and Steffan Lewis came in third. Nearest the pin on the eighteenth was Clive (Ghosty) Williams while Clive Morgan had the longest drive on the twelfth.
At the nineteenth hole the participants were entertained by the recently formed mixed choir “Sgarmes” ably led by Eleanor Powell and the high standard of singing was enjoyed by all. After an excellent meal Andrew Curley who along with Hugh Bates were responsible for organising the day led an auction of different lots which helped inflate the sum raised for the Bow Street Magpies.
