Despite the awful weather in June, the local golfers still turned in impressive numbers supporting the club competitions and travelling far and wide in search of different challenges.
The beginning of the month saw the second qualifying round of the Redvers Llewelyn competition played in which two handicappers lead the way with excellent returns. Anthony Wyn Jones (72-7-65) held off Ioan Richards (69-4-65) on the back nine with Jeremy Edmunds (77-9-68) and Julian Thomas (83-15-68) third and fourth respectively. All four had their handicaps dropped by at least a shot. On same weekend, the Ffosset Roberts Bogey was contested and Wayne James (+4) off 19 beat Alex James also (+4) off 5 on a count back. Anthony Wyn Jones (-1) off 6 and Mark Davies
(-1) off 19 were the best of the rest. Wayne James' handicap was reduced by 3.

The two following weekends had an Extra medal and Extra stableford competition. In the Medal, in form Anthony Wyn Jones fired an excellent (70-6-64) to see his handicap drop to 5. He was followed by another in form player Aneurin Thomas (82-14-68) with Anthony Griffiths (72-2-70) and Wayne James (88-16-72) leading the chasing pack. In the Stableford, veteran Tom O'Connor showed that he has lost none of his undoubted class and skill with 39 points leading from Richard Duggan 38 points and Clive Davies and Alun John, both on 36.

On the final weekend of the month, in yet more unpleasant conditions, the JD Jones Club Championship and the Ken Joel Cup (for the best net score) were held. In the Club Championship played over 36 holes, Simon Edwards led after the first round with an excellent 3 under par 67, well ahead of the rest of the field. However, in the second afternoon round, he lost concentration to return a 6 over par 76 to give a 36 hole total of 143. Tim Jenkins who had fired a 2 over par 72 in the morning showed his consistency with another steady afternoon round of 71 to also give him a combined two round total of 143. Simon and Tim then had to go head to head and on the second extra hole Tim's more consistent two rounds were rewarded when he saw off Simon's brave challenge. However Simon's morning round 67-4-63 was easily good enough to take the Ken Joel Cup with his brother-in-law John W Davies runner up with (76-8-68). Tim Jenkins' first round (72-3-69) and Barry Pugh's (84-15-69) third and fourth.

The Seniors continued their summer programme beating their compatriots from Aberdovey at home while losing away at Llanidloes. Their home game with Cardigan had to be abandoned after half a dozen holes when a persistent thick mist meant that the match was completed socially at the nineteenth hole. Several seniors also played at the Monmouthshire Seniors Open at Abergavenny and at Harlech. A team comprising of Geraint Evans, Dave Houghton, Harvey Singh and Mike Bradley were one of three teams to travel to Hawkstone Park in Shropshire and were to return successfully with the third prize in their Open Four man team competition.

The Rabbits continued a their season entertaining Cardigan at home winning by five matches to one. Unfortunately in the Welsh Golfing Union Team Championship, the five man team failed to qualify for the finals losing by three matches to two against near neighbours Penrhos - a match played at neutral Borth and Ynyslas. On a windy Friday night the Penrhos team were able to better master the tricky conditions to come away with a deserved win.

Finally it is a pleasure to welcome home local golfer Richard James on vacation from his golfing education in the USA. He has had a busy programme playing various championships and returned several promising results. The best of these came at the Cardigan Golf Club where the Dyfed Golfing Union Open Championship was held. After tying for the lead after two rounds he went on to win the championship at the second extra play off hole beating the home player Richard Emanuel of Cardigan
