The end of May saw the first of the main “board” competitions played at Aberystwyth Golf Club with the Corporation Cup played over two successive days.
In the first round played on the Saturday the standard was set high with 15 players returning a net score of 72 or less. Leading the way was Simon Edwards with a return of 73-5-68 with Harvi Singh second on 80-11-69. Dai Blair with 73-3-70 was third beating Huw Williams 80-10-70 on countback.
On the Sunday some competitive scores were returned, leading the way was Huw Williams with 78-10-68 beating three players on 69 net. The best of these three was Jac Rimmer 73-4-69 beating Simon Edwards 74-5-69 on countback who similarly held off Ioan R Richards 75-6-69. With the two rounds combined leading the way with 68+69 = 137 was Simon Edwards beating Huw Williams 70+68 = 138. Next came Ioan Rhys Richards 71+69 = 140, Nick Morgan 71+71 = 142 was fourth. So after winning his first Corporation Cup back in 1989 Simon Edwards achieved the double in this prestigious competition 28 years later.
Previous to this competition, several qualifying rounds took place. The first of which was the initial qualifier for the Redvers Llewellyn Cup. Leading the qualifiers was Nick Morgan with 80-12-68 beating Anthony Griffiths 71-3-68 on countback . Simon Edwards was third with 75-5-70 and Bryn Shepherd 85-14-71 fourth, the best of four players on 71 nett.
In the Captains 4 Ball Better Ball Qualifier leading the way was Ioan Richards and Patrick Jones on 45 points just beating Arwyn Morris and Terry Richards 44 points who had a better back nine than Dylan Morris and Trevor Stables also 44 points. Fourth were Mathew Evans and Bryn Shepherd on 41 points. The top eight pairs will now play in a K.O. competition over the Summer.
In a Bank Holiday Stableford, Anthony Griffiths with a return of 41 points off 3 reflecting his current top form led from Mark Deveraux 38 off 8. Jamie Rees 37 off 14 and Ioan Rhys Richards 36 off 6 followed. The first three all saw a shot disappear off their handicap.
The Tigers continued their progress in the Jeff Harries Bowl (a Greensome Foursome Dyfed League competition) travelling to Newport, Pembs Golf Club and beating the home team by 4 matches to 3.
The Rabbits welcomed close neighbours Penrhos and the final result saw a tight 3 matches each finish.
