Despite the various extremes of weather encountered since the beginning of the year, the activities at the local club kept on occurring regularly with the course in excellent condition for the time of year.
The most important day so far was the Captain’s Drive In when new Captain Barry Phipson in the presence of an excellent crowd of members and friends drove in in style. There followed a 4 ball better ball competition with some excellent scores returned. Leading the way was the Clive Williams, Stuart Wassal duo on 49pts from Steve Hughes and Graham Saunders Jnr on 46pts second. Third was Martin Harries and Ian Jones on 45pts with Dylan Morris and Roly Salmon 43pts fourth. Barry Phipson welcomed his playing guests with a warming bowl of cawl after wards in his welcoming speech urged members to support the Captaincy and Club.
The Winter League continued to be played during this period and in Winter League 6, Anthony Griffiths returned an excellent score of 41pts off 4 to drop his handicap to 3 with John Walter Davies second on 35pts off 6 and Peter Basnett 34 off 16 beating Dylan Morris alsp 34 off 6 on countback. In Winter League 7 Martin Harries led with 38pts off 7 from Roly Salmon off 17 with the best of three players all on 37 points. Bryn Shepherd off 14 and Martyn Haynes off 9 were third and fourth respectively.
The Wednesday Cut Throat also celebrated with their annual dinner at the club at the beginning of February. An excellent dinner and social evening was enjoyed by all. The evening concluded with the Cut Throat Shield presented to the player with most wins during the year. Retaining the Shield that he won a year earlier was Aled Bebb who with 5 wins beat Dai (Cambrian News) Davies who also had 5 wins but by virtue of more second places Aled Bebb therefore retained the Shield.
It’s been a pleasure to have the company of Richard James in several of the Tuesday and Wednesday Cut Throats as he builds up towards his opening match in the Challenge Tour in the Spring. It was also good news to note that he already has shown form in coming 17th in an Early Season Invitation Competition in Spain.
It was also a pleasure to note that another past Junior Member of the Club, Gareth Walley has made the Royal Navy Golf Team.
