Elis becomes Club Champion 2016
Report by Aled Bebb
With the Summer Programme coming to an end at the local club several important competitions reached the final stages towards the end of August and beginning of September.
In the Redvers Llewellyn final, the 36 qualifiers from six qualifying rounds went head to head. Out on his own winning with a return of 76-8-68 was Aneurin Thomas dropping his handicap to seven. Three players were close runners up, Clive Davies with 79-10-69 beating Jeremy Edmunds 75-6-69 on countback with Ioan Rhys Richards fourth with 76-7-69, also on countback. The excellent returns reflected the standard that the course has attained with the two new greenkeepers.
The Club Championship was the first of the knock out matches to be played, over 36 holes off scratch. Young Elis Lewis took on the more experienced Anthony Griffiths, but Elis was soon 2 up after nine holes. Then on the back nine of the first round Elis produced a game winning batch of holes where he was four under par for the nine holes, to go five up after 18 holes. On the second 18 holes Elis soon went seven up after twenty seventh hole, halved 28 and 29 and closed out the match on the 30th to win by an impressive 7 and 6 margin to become Aberystwyth Club Champion for 2016. The semi-finalists were Dylan Morris and Daniel Basnett.
In the Presidents putter final, another young up and coming talent Sion Edwards took on an older adversary in Jeremy Edmunds. In a very tight match Sion who had already won this competition for the last two years led by one after 15 holes. The sixteenth was halved but Jeremy Edmunds’ accuracy off the tee paid off as he parred 17th and 18th to win by the narrow margin of one up. The semi-finalists were Emlyn Thomas and Dylan Morris again.
The Club Foursomes final saw past winners Clive Williams and Emlyn Thomas try to repeat previous success against Llanilar duo Mark Rimmer and John W Davies. With a steady round of golf, Clive and Emlyn had established a lead by the 14th hole and were 3 up with four to play. However Mark and John Walter never lost confidence that they could wheel the older pair in and after winning the 15th and halving the 16th they went on to win the last two holes to complete a surprising win by 1 hole to win the Foursomes as a pair for the first time. Losing semi-finalists were Sion Edwards and Barry Phipson, and Chris Tapp and Anthony Wyn Jones.
Another close match was played in the Vice Captain’s Plate final between Arwyn Morris and Terry “Bara” Davies. Having played 18 holes, there was no way of separating them but on the first extra hole Arwyn won the hole to take the honours. The unfortunate losers in the semi final were B.Willis and Trevor Stables.
In a Bank Holiday Stableford Graham Tapp with 37 points off 14 beat Martin Harries also 37 off 9 on countback who similarily beat Clive Davies 37 off 11 to third and Richard Weston fourth in 34 off 13.
In the Dyfed League the Tigers travelled to Carmarthen and narrowly lost 5-4 but comfortably beat Milford Haven at home by 7 matches to 2.The Rabbits played Carmarthen at home and had a comfortable 5-1 win while the Seniors playing their penultimate match against Penrhos at home won comfortably by 5 matches to 1.
