More from Aled Bebb,
Two important competitions took place in the last month at the Aberystwyth Golf Club and one player dominated both competitions. After missing the early part of the season on an elongated holiday to Oceania, Pat Jones returned to dominate the Club Championship and the J.R. James trophy. Both played over 36 holes, Pat’s consistent golf paid off handsomely.
In the Club Championship the 36 holes were played off scratch on the same day. In the first round Pat Jones led with 78-5-73 from Ellis Lewis 72-0-72 and Simon Edwards 81-5-76. The second round played in the afternoon with the playing condition much harder with rain and a strong wind to contend was reflected in higher scores. Pat Jones returned 82-5-77 while Ellis Lewis was 81-0-81 and Simon Edwards 87-5-82. Pat Jones’ combined 73+77-150 was enough to hold off the rest (Ellis Lewis 72+81-153 and Simon Edwards 76+82-158) to become Club Champion. Played in conjunction, the handicapped J D Jones Cup was held. Winning with a better back nine was Dylan Morris 74-5-69 from Pat Jones 73-4-69 and James Harvey 81-10-71.
In the J.R.James trophy on day one the leader in the clubhouse was Clive D Williams with 80-11-69 from Pat Jones 74-3-71, beating Gerwyn Pugh 80-9-71 on countback and Wayne Gornall 82-10-72 fourth. Several others were in close contention. On the following day Pat Jones’ consistent 74-3-71 saw him leading from Martyn Haynes’ 83-10-73 and James Harvey on 83-10-73 with Jeremy Edmunds 81-6-75. The combined score saw Pat Jones’ net scores of 71+71=142 beat Clive Williams’ 69+75=144, Gerwyn Pugh 71+77=148 and Martyn Haynes 76+74=150. Thus a very successful month for Pat Jones saw him winner of the J R James and Club Championship - an excellent double success.
The second round of the Redvers Llewellyn was held with Adrian Davies return of 78-10-68 seeing him lead and become a single handicap player for the first time. Second was Pat Jones 73-4-69 with Steve Hughes 77-6-71 beating Mark Rimmer 86-15-71 on countback.
Two Individual Stableford competitions were also held. The first was a Father’s Day competition which saw D W Davies win with 37 off 17, Chris Tapp 35 off 9 second, Simon Edwards 34 off 5 third. Terry Davies 33 off 17 was fourth. In the other Stableford, Sion Edwards returned 39 off 9 (lowering his handicap to 8) easily mastering difficult conditions with Anthony Griffiths second with 34 off 4, Mark Deveraux 33 off 7 and Dylan Morris also 33 off 5 fourth on countback.
In an Open 4 Ball Better Ball competition, Anthony Griffiths and Clive D Williams with 40 points beat Terry Davies and John James 39 points with Steve Hughes and Steve Beresford 38 points beating Adrian Davies and Ray Dodd also 38 points on the back nine.
