Captain Tim Jenkins begins his Drive - In
Following one of the wettest mid-winters for many years, the golfers at Aberystwyth continued with their weekly sojourn.
Having had to postpone his Drive In (traditionally taking place at the beginning of January) because of the weather, the in-coming Captain Tim Jenkins finally began his year with a misty start in the middle of February. On the day, under a Texas Scrabble format, Justin Quinn, Ioan Richards and Chris Tapp with 59.8 points led the field from Dai Blair, Richard James and Wyn Hughes on 60.4 points. Dan Basnett, Adrian Davies and Huw Williams were third on 61.1 points. It was a pleasure to welcome Richard James home from the Americas and also Wyn Hughes back from illness.
Despite an unprecedented blip in the middle of January when heavy rain caused the course to close, the Winter League continued to be played, often by enthusiastic golfers in unfavourable weather.
In Winter League round five, (Division 1) Chris Tapp with 39 points off 8 led from Anthony Griffiths 35 off 5. In Div 2, Stephen Williams 34 off 17 held off Jeff Jones Hughes 34 off 18 on the back nine.
In Div 3, overall winner Paul Haggett 39 off 28 beat Paul Rimmer 31 off 28.
In Winter League six on a wet and blustery day, in Div 1 Martin Harries with 35 off 9 beat Jeremy Edmunds 35 off 6 on countback while overall winner Stephen Williams led Div 2 with an excellent (due to the conditions) 39 off 17. Graeme Lane was second with 25 off 16. The only entry in Div 3 was Chris O’Rourke with 24 points off 21.
Winter League 7 was played on another bleak February day. In Div 1, overall winner Jeremy Edmunds with 37 off 6 just beat Tim Jenkins 36 off 3. In Div 2 Jeff Jones Hughes with 33 off 18 led Stephen Williams 31 off 16 while in Div 3 Anthony Evans (19) 26 beat Keith Jones (16) 31.
With the weather now improving, Winter League 8 took place with a fair turnout of players. Overall winner and leading Div 1 was Aneurin Thomas with 38 off 8 beating Anthony Griffiths 36 off 5. In Div 2 Stephen Williams with 37 off 16 beat James Jenkins 33 off 14 while Chris O’Rourke 36 off 21 beat Paul Rimmer 32 off 28 in Division 3.
