No sooner than the winter programme at Aberystwyth Golf Club concluded with the Winter League finals played than the busy summer programme took off.
In the first qualifying round of the Redvers Llewellyn Medal Nick Morgan with 81-12-69 led Barry Phipson 79-7-72 second and Wayne Gornall 83-10-73 beating Simon Edwards 78-5-73 on countback.
What with the fine weather experienced during April over seventy players played in the Captain’s Cup and Vice Captain’s Plate. In the Captain’s Cup for 16 and under handicappers Simon Edwards with 80-12-68 beat Martyn Haynes 78-9-69 and Martin Harries 79-10-69 with Pat Jones fourth with 74-4-70. For the high handicappers for the Vice Captain’s Plate Mike Bradley returned an excellent 86-20-66 with Terry Richards 89-17-72 second and Chris O’Rourke 94-21-73 beating James Jenkins 91-18-73 for third. The top sixteen qualifiers in both sections will now play in a knock out match play in each category.
The first of a series of Summer Stablefords took place and leading was James Jenkins with 43 points off 18. Second was ever improving Wayne Gornall with 39 points off 10 with Martin Harries also 39 off 9 third and Wayne James 37 off 14 fourth. James’ 43 points sees his handicap drop to 16 and Wayne Gornall becomes a single handicapper for the first time now playing off 9.
The Tigers got their programme going with two disappointing results. In the Welsh golfing Union Team Championship qualifier they travelled to Haverfordwest to meet a strong Neath team only to lose 4-1 despite taking all the matches to the final green. In the Dyfed Union Jeff Harries Bowl they travelled to Cilgwyn only to lose by 5 matches to 2.
However the Rabbits under the captaincy of Phil Talco got their Dyfed League programme off to a flyer beating last year’s champions Carmarthen 5-2 at home. The following week they kept up the standards with another win 6-1 over Tenby also at home. The challenge will be to maintain this form on the road.
On a positive note Richard James and David Blair progressed in the W.G.U. Victory Shield taking on Milford Haven at Cardigan and coming away with a comfortable win 7 -5.
On the final weekend of April, the Mid Wales Alliance visited the club and 148 golfers from all over Mid Wales took part. However local knowledge led to Tim Jenkins and Justin Quinn to lead the way with Aneurin Thomas and Jonathan Evans the runners up.
Finally on the first of May, Aberystwyth Football Club took over the local course to have a very successful team of four competition where 18 teams enjoyed a good day’s golf and an enjoyable 19th hole meal by the efficient Deby.
