The Winter programme drew to an end with the eight qualifying teams battling it out for the Morlais Hughes Trophy in the Winter League finals. Comfortably winning were the Penrhyncoch based team of Martin Harries, Aneurin Thomas, Justin Quinn and Jonathan Evans. Runners up were the past Captain Clive “Ghosty” Williams’ team of Ray Dodd and father and son couple Terry and Adrian Davies.
In the individual event in Category 1, Jonathan Evans (4) with 40 points led Ioan Rhys Richards (7) with 39 holding off Justin Quinn (5) on countback. In Category 2, Nigel Southgate (10) led with 38 points with Clive D Williams (11) 37 second and Roland Salmon (15) 36 third. In Category 3, Dai Christopher (27) with 37 points comfortably beat Julian Dotchon (20) 34 and Mike Jones (22) 33.
he following week the traditional Tigers and Rabbits match was due to take place but due to horrendous weather, the competition was called off for the first time for a long time. However by the following weekend, the Easter Weekend weather had relented and three days of excellent competition was experienced in glorious Springtime weather.
On the Friday, the traditional Major Mathias Bogey competition was played and after some early problems with low mist and blustery windy conditions, one of the early starters Steve Beresford with +2 off 5 went on to win from James Harvey +1, James Jenkins level and Aneurin Thomas -1.
The Saturday with the weather now warm and sunny, nearly seventy players challenged for the Rees Astley Cup. Leading the way was Dai (Cambrian News) Davies (15) with 39 points just beating Barry Pugh (12) 38 points with two up and coming juniors third and fourth. Sion Edwards (12) with 37 points just held off Jack Rimmer (5) with 36 points.
Finally on the Sunday in the first Medal Competition of the year off the back white tees, vice Captain Tim Jenkins returned winning 69-3-66 round. Arwyn Morris was second with 84-15-69. Third was past Captain Clive D Williams 81-11-70 beating Mark Deveraux 77-7-70 on countback.
Incidentally Arwyn Morris with a drop in handicap from 15 to 14 goes from a being a Rabbit to a Tiger.
