A report by Maggie Townrow
Pictured are three very happy members of Aberystwyth G.C. – Ruth Jones, Kay Thomas and Sue Hurds, whose combined talents saw off a large field of teams from all over mid-Wales in the recent Mid Wales County Golf Association’s first event of the year: this was held at Builth Wells. The ladies scored 77 points, with another Aberystwyth team of Ann Shaw, Iris Richards and Maggie Townrow narrowly pipped into third place with 74 points.
Also pictured is Billy Owen, presenting the Margaret Owen Memorial Trophy to the winner, Ruth Morris. Billy graciously thanked the ladies of Aberystwyth for keeping Margaret’s memory alive with their annual, hard-fought contest for – in Ruth’s words – “…this very lovely trophy”. In addition, Ruth’s name will once again be on the Honours Board for her Best Gross 88.
Another lady who featured in the first presentation of 2015 was Kathleen Jenkins, who scooped the Red Dragon Brooch with a Net 68 and won the annual Challenge Trophy in a dramatic match on the 18th hole from Angharad Basnet. Kathleen’s name will also appear again on the Honours Board.
Kay Thomas was pleased to present her mother’s Cup – the Meg Bowen Consistent Golfer award – to Maggie Townrow, which has helped reduce Maggie’s handicap to 25. Maggie returned the compliment by presenting Kay with the very elegant little bird ornament as winner of the Birdie Tree competition 2014. Kay had 8 birdies – no mean feat at Aberystwyth. Lastly, but by no means least, Ann Shaw was given the Betty Hinton Jones Most Improved award for the second year running, reducing her handicap from 27.3 to 25.6
In late April Aberystwyth Ladies play host to Borth Ladies in the tussle for the Evelyn Jenkins Memorial Trophy. This very stylish piece of Welsh slate is held by Borth, but Aberystwyth will go all out to win, holding on to it until the return match at Borth in 2016.
