The cold snap that endured towards the end of January and into February caused the introduction of winter greens to several competitions. This was reflected in the scores returned by some players. However the inclement weather was not reflected in the good turnouts, especially in the very popular Winter League Qualifying matches.
In Winter League 6, nearly 70 players turned out and on proper greens the scores were very consistent. In Category 1, Jonathan Evans (4) returned an excellent 42 points with James Laing (8) second with 40 points beating Dylan Morris (5) on countback. In Category 2, Martin Groom (18) with 39 points beat Wayne Gornall (12) 38 and Dylan Wyn Hughes (11) 38. And in Category 3, James Jenkins (20) with 40 points beat Phil Talco (20) 36 points, with George Shepherd (20) 35 points in third place.
In Winter League 7, Jonathan Evans(4) again led in Category 1 with 42 points beating Martin Harries (9) 40 points and Mark Deveraux (6) 39. In Category 2 D.W.Davies (16) really took advantage of the Winter greens in operation and returned 49 points beating Dylan Jones (16) with 46 points and Lloyd Evans (17) 44 points, third. Another to take a liking to the unnatural playing conditions in Category 3 was Phil Talco (20) with 46 points. Ray Dodd (20) 43 points and Mike Bradley (20) 42 points followed.
Three Extra Stableford Competitions took place during this time.
In the first, Ioan Rhys Richards (8) with 42 points held off Adrian Davies (9) 41 points in Category 1. Jack Rimmer (6) was third with 40 points. In Category 2, Steven Williams (18) with 39 led Wayne Gornall (12) 38 points and veteran Alun John (11) 27. In Category 3, Mike Daniel (19) led the way with 43 points with James Jenkins (21) 41 and Trevor Stables (25) 38 following.
At the beginning of February in an Extra Stableford, Jack Rimmer (5) with 37 points led Martyn Haynes (8) 24 with Mark Deveraux (6) 33 points, third. In category 2, James Jenkins (17) with 34 points beat Lloyd Evans (17) and Alun John (11) with 34 points, on countback. In Category 3, Chris O’Rouke (20) with 27 points beat Paul Rimmer (27) 25. In very cold and windy conditions the 30 odd players that turned out are to be congratulated.
And in the other Extra Stableford with the conditions now much improved and the greens progressively improving, J. W. Davies (6) led in Category 1 with 40 points from Jeremy Edmunds (6) 38 points and Mark Deveraux, another six handicapper with 36 points, third. In Category 2 in form Lloyd Evans (17) led with 41 points holding off Clive Davies (11) 41 and Terry Richards (18) 41 both on countback. And in Category 3, Anthony Evans (20) was the winner with 40 points with Dai Christopher (27) 36 and Mike Jones (22) 35, third.
In the now traditional manner the loyal Wednesday Cut Throat players held their annual dinner at the club. This year reflected the popularity of the Wednesday session with over thirty players qualifying for the end of year celebration. During an excellent evening led by Chief Cut Throater Brian Blair he announced that although several players had won the weekly Cut Throat three times the jovial Irishman from Capel Bangor, Noel Scott had achieved the feat four times to add his name for the first time on to the Cut Throat Shield Hall of Fame.
