One of the most important board competitions of the year, the J.R.James Trophy took place in July. Played on consecutive days over 36 holes, the challenge rewarded the most consistent golfers.
The first round on the Saturday saw excellent scoring with nine players beating par. Leading the way with 70-6-64, was Jonathan Evans with young Sion Edwards 78-12-66 and Jeremy Edmunds 73-7-66 second and third. Ioan Richards 70-3-67 was fourth. On the Sunday, Jonathan Evans going out last held his nerve to return another sub par round of 74-6-68 for a total of 132 to comfortably hold off the rest of the field. Runner up was Sion Meredith who, after a first round of 68 returned another steady 73-6-67 round for a total of 135 beating Jeremy Edmunds’ total of 135 on countback.
Ioan Richards was again fourth with a 136 total.
On the same Sunday, an extra medal was played with Dafydd Edwards, 86-20-66 beating Adrian Davies 77-11-66 on the back nine. Aneurin Thomas 77-9-68 was third. Needless to say the Handicap Committee were busy cutting handicaps afterwards.
Earlier in the month a Summer Stableford was played and Ray Dodd with 36 points off 20 lead the way from Jeff Hughes 35 off 17. He beat Terry Richards also 35 off 17 on the back three with Harvi Singh fourth, 34 off 14.
A team of three competition also took place with Club Captain Clive Williams’ team of Adrian Davies and Sion Meredith narrowly beating the Jeremy Edmunds, James Jenkins and Harvi Singh’s team on 84 points. Ioan Richards, Steve Williams and Chris O’Rouke on 53 points in third.
In the Dyfed league the Tigers entertained Trefloyne and in a tight match came away with a 5 ½ - 3 ½ win.
The Seniors continued on their nomadic treks travelling to Aberdovey and halved a tight match 3-3. In the same week they travelled to Llandrindod and returned with an excellent 3 ½ - 2 ½ win.
