Pictured with the Corporation Cup winner Jack Rimmer is Club Captain, Clive Williams and Mayor of Aberystwyth Brenda Haines, who presented the trophy.
Arguably the most important competition of the year, The Corporation Cup took place recently. Played over two rounds on consecutive days, the course was laid out at its longest distance. With pin positions placed at their most awkward, the competition was to prove a true test of golf.
Leading the way this year was fifteen year old Penweddig Year 10 pupil, Jack Rimmer who has only been playing golf for the last three and a half years. He has established himself as a very special talent seeing a drop of over ten shots to his handicap over the last eighteen months. His handicap now is seven. Like all good sportsmen, he has ambitions to lower his handicap as near to scratch as possible in the next three years and considering the rate that he has come down in the past, it is not an unreasonable target. Jack’s excellent effort makes it the fourth time that one of Aberystwyth Juniors has won this prestigious competition following the previous efforts of Morgan Roberts Young, Rhydian ap Owen and Mesach Jones. Jack however is the youngest golfer to capture the Corporation Cup.
On the Saturday round one of the competition, Huw Williams with a special round of 75-11-64 led the way from Jack’s father, Mark Rimmer on 84-17-67. Jack returned 76-8-68 with Jeremy Edmunds 76-7-69 in fourth place.
On the Sunday, the top fifteen players from Saturday went out last. The best round of the day came from Chris Tapp with 79-10-69 but Jack Rimmer with another steady round of 77-8-69 held off Graham Tapp 83-11-72 and Keith Clements 88-16-72. Leader on the Saturday Huw Williams unfortunately fell off slightly with an 86-11-75 return.
Totalling the two rounds, Jack led the rest with a 68+69 total 137 with the Huw Williams 64+75 two shots back on 139. Keith Clements with 69+72 total 141 in third held off Clive Davies 69+73 on 142 in fourth. All the leading players saw their handicap fall accordingly.
On the previous Sunday, the Captains 4BBB qualifier took place with the top eight pairs qualifying for the knock out stage. In difficult conditions, the scoring was not outstanding but the competition was very close. Leading the way was the Harvi Singh / Jeremy Edmunds pair with 40 points beating the Sion Meredith and Clive D Williams with 40 points on the back six. Third being the best of three pairs on 39 points was Aneurin Thomas and Anthony Wyn Jones.
The Rabbits continued their downward slide going down away to Priskilly, losing by 4 ½ to 1 ½ . The club also lost out in the first qualifying round of the Welsh Team Championships, losing 3 ½ to 1 ½ to a very experienced Clyne Golf Club on the Cradoc fairways in Brecon.
