CLECS Y CLWB / CLUB GOSSIP (early May, 2014) (08-05-2014)

Further report from Aled

During the Easter period the Junior Section at the Aberystwyth golf club met to celebrate the beginning of their golfing year. The new Junior Captain, Bryony James duly ‘drove in’ in style. Bryony has long been a member at the club and has represented the club successfully in various competitions all over Wales. The honour of being Captain of her section represents the appreciation that the club feels towards her full commitment to the Junior Section at the club over the years.

In the Competition that followed in an 18 hole Stableford, Jack Rimmer with 36 points, held off Aled Saymm on 35 points and Sion Edwards 34 points. Meanwhile the under 11’s played a selected shorter course and in the Boys Section, Liam Thomas completed his round in 27 shots, Jac Morris 33 shots and Steff Taylor 38 shots while in the Girls Section Victoria Talco took 34 shots narrowly beating Shemina Laing who took 35 shots and Alex Clement, 40 shots.

A thoroughly good afternoon came to an end with typical ‘socializing’ in the clubhouse afterwards.
Our congratulations to Angharad Basnett who earlier this year became Mid Wales County Junior Champion and has gone on to complete a superb clean sweep of all the Major Mid Wales County Golf trophies.

In the second Summer Stableford, Martyn Haynes (11) was best of 4 players on 37 points. Second was Chris Tapp (10) with James Jenkins (25) Adrian Davies (11) in third and fourth places respectively.

On the following week, a 3 man Texas Scramble took place and with an excellent return of 55.8 was David Blair, Chris O’Rourke and Steven Williams. They led the way from Gerwyn Parry, Graham Tapp and Martyn Haynes who with a return of 59.35 narrowly held off Sean Bethell, Paul Weston and Trevor Stables in third place on 59.9.

Early May saw the first Monthly Medal take place in blustery conditions. Leading the way was Anthony Griffiths with 74-4-70 from Geoff Jones-Hughes 89-18-71 and Jeremy Edmunds with
79-7-72.

Meanwhile the Tigers continued their steady start to their season with an excellent 6-3 win away at Penrhos. The Rabbits also continued their unbeaten start entertaining Penrhos at home and winning by 4 matches to 2 but came down to earth away to Penrhos losing by 5 matches to 1.
