Aled Bebb gives us his first report of the year
Despite the stormy weather experienced throughout January, the golfers at Aberystwyth Golf Club were able to turn out in ever impressive numbers.
On the first weekend the new Captain, Clive “Ghosty” Williams, a local garage( New Cross) proprietor “drove in” his Captaincy. His obvious popular nomination as Captain saw a large turnout for his drive in and a large majority stayed on consequently to play in a Stableford competition. Leading the way were two comparative novice golfers who are impressively improving their game. Winning with 43 points off his handicap of 25 was Steven Williams with Chris O’Rouke 40 points off 23, runner up. Third and fourth were two of the Llanilar membership, Phil Talco(27) with 39 points beating Iwan Evans (22) also with 39 points on the back nine. A “hidden partnership” competition was also run along side the main competition with Ray Dodds 37 points and John Scullions 37 points making a total of 75 points. They just beat Richard Duggan’s 30 points and Steven Williams’ 43 points total of 73 points. On the day Clive said he was proud to accept the honour of the Captaincy and also introduced his vice-Captain, Clive Davies.
On the two following weekends, the Winter League continued apace with 50 players turning out for Winter League 5. Here young Jack Rimmer (9) with 41 points led from new Captain CliveWilliams (12), D.W.Davies (15), Terry Davies (19), all with 40 points.
In Winter League 6, nearly 60 players turned out taking advantage of a rare rather quiet day weatherwise. Phil Talco (27) led with 44 points; Chris Tapp (10) 43 points, leader in the clubhouse for quite sometime, was runner up. Third was ever improving Phil Small (19) 42 points and Clive Davies (13) with 38 points was the best of four players on 38 points.
Finally following the Winter Leagues, an extra Stableford was held with Harvi Singh (13) scoring 43 points beating Jack Rimmer (8) with 42 points. Dave Houghton (10) 42 points was third and Steven Williams (24) 41, fourth.
