Aberystwyth Golf Club celebrated its annual Open Week in glorious weather although many competitors found the firm conditions brought about by the long spell of fair weather difficult to play. However it was generally agreed by members and visitors that the course was in a fair and challenging condition.
On the first Sunday a four man Stableford Rumble was held and the two leading teams had a strong Llanilar content. Narrowly winning with 97 points was the Barry Phipson led team of Steve Williams, Roly Salmon and Trevor Stables with Simon Edwards’ team of Phil Talco, Paul Wyn Jones and Mark Rimmer runners up on 96 points. Third and narrowly losing on countback was the Aberystwyth Club Captain Barry Crawford’s team of Clive E Williams, Emlyn Thomas and Huw Williams. The leading Ladies team was that of Kathleen Jenkins, Iris Richards, Margaret Thomas and Ruth Morris with 88 points.
On the Wednesday, the Seniors Open took place and immediate past Captain Clive Williams was the overall winner on 37 points, beating Graham Tapp on countback. However Grahams’ 37 points was good enough to win his category in the 55-65 year olds with D.A.Davies 35 points second and Graham Saunders (Borth and Ynyslas) 33 points third. In the plus 65 year old category Emrys James led with 36 points having a better back nine than J.A.V.Roberts 36 points with another visitor from the Swinton Club in Wolverhampton K.Smith third on 35 points.
On the Friday an Open Stableford was held and two high handicappers led the way. First with 40 points was Chris O’Rouke off 27 and visitor W. Tatum of the Leominster Club with 38 points off 28 beating Aneurin Thomas also 38 points off 12. Fourth with 37 points off 12 was Aled Bebb.
Bringing the Open week to a close on the Saturday was a 4 ball better ball Stableford competition. Interestingly, two father and son combinations led the way. First with 42 points was the Llanilar pair of Simon and Sion Edwards beating the Midland’s based visiting team of A and W Pope on 41 points. Another youngster Jack Rimmer helped veteran Elfed Isaac to third place with 40 points with yet another visiting pair Gareth Stack and E Hunt from the Elmsmere Club the best of 5 teams on 39 points.
Prior to the Open Week, the fourth qualifying round of the Redvers Llewellyn took place and the in form Vice Captain Clive Williams with 77-12-76 led from Mark Jones 78-11-67. Third was Jeremy Edmunds 77-9-68 with Lloyd Evans 91-22-69, fourth.
The Super Six team had conflicting results with a 4-2 loss to Cardigan at the Penrhos Club but returned to form with a pleasing 5-1 win against Glynhir on the Cardigan course.
The Seniors continued with their programme experiencing a good win against Llandrindod by 5 matches to 1 at home but travelled to Aberdovey and lost by 4 matches to 1. However they went away to Cardigan and had an excellent win by 5 ½ to 2 ½.
