CLECS Y CLWB / CLUB GOSSIP (May, 2013) (11-05-2013)
Aled Bebb reports on our golfing activities during April.
With the weather gradually continuing to improve, further summer qualifying matches took place at the local club.
Leading the sixteen qualifiers for the knock out section of the prestigious Captain’s Cup for 0 – 14 handicappers was Aneurin Thomas (83 – 12 – 71) with Graham Tapp (85 – 13 – 72) holding off Simon Edwards (76 – 4 – 72) on count back. Next came Clive (Ghosty) Williams (84 – 12 – 72).
In the Vice Captain’s Plate (14 - 28 handicappers) Arwyn Morris led the way (91 – 17 – 74) from Wayne James (90 – 16 – 74) and Barry Crawford (89 – 15 – 74). Youngster Sion Edwards is continuing to improve was next (100 – 25 – 75). This improvement continued the following week when an Extra Stableford was played with Sion leading the field with 40 points off his handicap of 25. His handicap has now been lowered to 23. Second off 16 was Wayne James with 37 points with another Junior Jack Rimmer 36 points playing to his 11 handicap third. Jeremy Edmunds with 35 points off 9 was fourth.
With the season up and running, several pairs and team competitions took place with the club generally finding early season form somewhat difficult to find. In the Welsh Team Championship’s first qualifying round, Aberystwyth took on a strong Neath team at neutral Llandrindod Wells. They lost a close match narrowly by 3 and 2. In the Victory Shield Foursomes that an Aber pair reached the final in 2011, Pat Jones and Tim Jenkins took on the Borth and Ynyslas pair of Zack Galliford and Mark Lewis at neutral Cardigan. The Borth pair played very steady golf to easily beat the Aberystwyth couple by 6 and 4. In the Daily Mail Foursomes first round Emlyn Thomas and Clive Williams travelled to Llanidloes to take on a couple representing the local club. Again the Aber pair failed to master the Llanidloes course and local knowledge led to the Llanidloes team coming away with a 5 and 4 comfortable win.
The Rabbits meanwhile started their season off majestically with a 5 – 1 home win against Newport, Pembs. However two away matches at Priskilly (where they lost by 5 ½ – ½) and Glynhir (where they suffered a complete whitewash by 6 matches to 0) meant that Captain Terry Richards will have to circle his wagons before the next fixture. The Tigers however got off to a good start going away to Newport, Pembs by getting a good win by 5 ½ and 3 ½.
Meanwhile the club finished the month of April entertaining the Mid Wales Golf Alliance to a two man Texas Scramble Competition. With 72 pairs entered, the competition was keen and leading the way with a score of 60.6 was the Welshpool pair of D. Jones and H. Bowen. They were well ahead of the Llanidloes pair of P.Packham and P.Wilden (63.7). Another Llanidloes pair K. Robinson and R.Lee were third with 63.8.
