CLECS Y CLWB / CLUB GOSSIP (February, 2013) (04-03-2013)
Aled gives his first report of the year.
The Winter League Competition at Aberystwyth Golf Club continued to attract golfers out despite the challenging conditions.
In Winter League 5 the frosty conditions meant that the Winter Greens had to be utilized and the high handicappers really took advantage with some excellent scores returned. Leading the way was Mark Rimmer 49 points off 20 with Mel Evans 44 off 26 holding off Paul Hagget 43 off 28 and Roland Salmon 42 off 16. Despite the conditions, over 60 players played showing their commitment to their teams.
Back on normal greens, Winter League 6 was played in galeforce conditions. Graham Tapp led the way with 38 points off 14 with Mark Rimmer again challenging with a more moderate 36 points off 20. He beat past Captain Clive Williams with 36 off 9 on countback with Nigel Southgate the best of three on 34 points off 11.
In Winter League 7 with first signs of Spring weather, another excellent turnout in the sixties saw Trevor Staples lead the way with 39 points off 26 just beating Sean Bethel 38 points off 15. Third was another ex Captain, now a Country Member, Patrick Edwards showing he still knows his way around the course with an excellent 35 points off 4 and high handicapper Iwan Evans was the best of several on 34 points 4th.
Traditionally on the second Wednesday of February the Wednesday cut throat have their annual dinner and presentation at the club. For the first time for many a year the weather restricted the competition on the day and only six players played after heavy morning rain with Mike Morris leading the way with a return of 34 points.
However despite the wet and cold conditions out on the course, the warm and light hearted atmosphere encountered in the evening celebrations was a complete contrast. The 27 players who had contributed weekly throughout the year enjoyed a thoroughly good, entertaining evening with the 19th hole living up to it’s usual tradition. After dinner the chief organiser of the Wednesday cut throat, Brian Blair announced that new member Jeremy Edmunds, despite only playing 23 times had won the Shield for this year, with five wins, easily beating four others who had three wins each - (Anthony Griffiths, Dai Jones, Huw Williams and Richie Jenkins). Out of the forty one cut throats played throughout the year Brian Blair had played in most with 37 appearances, with the player with the best average score was Huw Williams with 33.1 points per game. Several holes in one were recorded throughout the year with Aled Bebb registering two on consecutive days, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Well done Aled!!!! (Ed)
